Overview

Agent-based simulation is superior to numerical simulation when there is a high degree of varying interconnection among models and the models change between simulations.

Agent-based Simulation vs. Numerical Simulation

1. Operations personel can describe the models themselves so there is no need for mathematical translation.

2. Operations personnel can easily identify agents and their behaviors.

3. Missing, incomplete, or erroneous models can be added, completed, or corrected by operations personnel.

4. Signaling that occurs in everyday operations can be represented as part of the behavior of the agents.

5. Learning from experience is possible through the memories of agents.

Agent-based Simulation Example

Passenger Boarding

Bin storage is not assigned and bin selection is primarily related to row selection. Therefore, there is no differential effect among the different boarding patterns .

Interaction of passengers is the primarily differential factor in determining the duration of boarding.

No Assigned Seating

No ordered boarding pattern.

Human behavior is the controlling factor

Conclusion

Because of the smaller number of passengers having to come out into the Aisle, WilMA boarding is faster than Open Seating which is faster than Zone boarding.
